Bottom Freezer or Bottom Fridge?

Bottom Freezer or Bottom Fridge?

We spent our childhood on stools trying to reach the top freezer to get one more ice-cream and now that we have fantastic options among bottom freezers, we are not interested in eating ice-cream. Of course, when you are trying to choose a refrigerator, you hardly think of these things. You are mostly interested in the home appliance’s energy efficiency, if it fits, or even if it looks good, especially if you have an open plan kitchen.

Bottom freezer fridges were made to create more freezer space. Do you remember the tiny space of the top freezers? Well, they still do have limited space. And that’s actually one main reason why many families will pick a bottom freezer refrigerator over a bottom fridge in a nanosecond.

It’s been a while since the refrigerators gained in height, got fat, and became colorful. But the question remains: should the freezer be at the bottom or top? Should we check out their pros and cons?

Top freezer fridgesTop freezer fridges

Bottom fridge freezer appliances are usually thin and lately tall. But not too tall. After all, we have to somehow reach the top freezer and the adults shouldn’t use stools. But let’s take a look at their advantages and disadvantages.

The Pros
  • Top freezer refrigerators are affordable
  • They provide plenty of fridge space
  • The fridge is easy to reach by all members of the family
  • Since these appliances are not huge, they fit well in small houses
The Cons
  • The freezer space is limited
  • Not all members of the family can reach the freezer
  • Their design is considered dated
  • You don’t get ice (or water) dispenser options
  • There are no freezer drawers

Bottom freezer refrigerators are considered new technology since they entered the market only recently. One of their advantages is that they are not all the same in terms of their looks and space. The typical bottom freezers are the standard two-door fridges but French-door refrigerators still have the freezer at the lower part of the appliance. 4-door fridges also keep the freezer at the bottom. Let us make a list of the pros and cons of bottom freezer fridges.

The Pros
  • Ample freezer space – often with 2 or more drawers, and organization choices
  • Easy to reach freezer and thus, easy to see what you’ve got since frozen goods are not always easy to be distinguished
  • Contemporary design that will fit in any modern home
  • Large availability in regard to fridge designs, sizes, colors, and styles
  • Convenient refrigerator at eye level – no more bending to reach the vegetable compartment
  • Enough fridge space – depending on the model, its width and its height
The Cons
  • The price tag is high. Of course, the price depends on the fridge’s characteristics, the model, and the brand. But overall, such refrigerators are more expensive than top freezer fridges
  • Most of these fridges consume more energy although there are numerous choices among energy-efficient appliances
  • Wide 2-door fridges are hard to fit into any household. Also, short people have a difficult time reaching the upper shelves of the refrigerator, especially if this is a tall model
We choose bottom freezer refrigerators. What will you choose?

It doesn’t come as a surprise that bottom freezer refrigerators are found in greater abundance and are technologically advanced compared with the top freezer models. That’s because most families need the extra space of the bottom freezer and prefer to have the fridge shelves at shoulder level. And so, the higher the demand for bottom freezer models gave room for more designs, styles, and improved technology. Also, the extra storage room and the smart ways to organize all items in the fridge and in the freezer also became serious reasons for the prevalence of bottom freezer fridges. Last but not least, the gorgeous designs play their role too. With most kitchens being parts of living rooms and dining rooms in many homes today, having a presentable fridge in a matching color was also a good incentive for consumers.

We certainly vote in favor of bottom freezer fridges – with their goods and their bads, but before you make your choice, consider your space, personal needs, and expectations.
