Is It Okay to Paint Kitchen Appliances?

Are your old kitchen appliances ruining the look of your newly renovated kitchen? If yes, painting them is the solution. Some people paint their appliances because they want to keep the overall look of their indoor spaces uniform. Instead of buying new appliances, they choose to paint what they already have with a different color that matches the look they are opting for.

It would allow them to save money and preserve good-conditioned kitchen appliances, especially those with sentimental value. If your trusted appliance service technician has taken good care of your kitchen appliances, it would be a waste to buy another appliance only to match the color of your kitchen. Besides, it is pretty safe to paint kitchen appliances as long as you use heat-resistant appliance paint. You can choose paints that can match your kitchen’s new feel and look or apply the same color to make them look new.

But before you start painting your kitchen appliances, below are some things you should know:

Choosing the right appliance paint

If you feel like making a minimal change in your kitchen, painting some appliances might be best. First, it will only take at least a day to finish. Second, you’ll only spend a small amount of money for the materials depending on the size of the appliance.

Choosing the suitable paint for your appliance is vital to ensure safety and long-lasting results. Below are some of the things you must do to determine the appropriate paint to use:

1.   Identify which appliances to repaint to unify the overall kitchen design

Basically, you would want all your major kitchen appliances to have a similar finish. Your appliances don’t have to be of the same model, brand, or style, but they should at least have a color that could blend into the overall design of your space.

2.   Determine which type of paint to use

After deciding on which kitchen appliances to repaint, the next step is to choose the appropriate type of primer and paint based on the appliance’s material. Consider buying a primer specifically made for metal surfaces for your project. The primer blocks the stains on the appliance’s surface to ensure it bonds with the paint.

For the paint, choose heat-resistant products for appliances that tend to heat up, like cooking appliances such as ovens. Heat-resistant paints can withstand high temperatures.

3.   Consider spray paint

Use spray paint if you wish to paint your kitchen appliance with silver, white, or black shades. However, you need to use a clear enamel gloss protective spray once the spray paint dries.

Painting prep for your kitchen appliances

Preparing the surface of your kitchen appliance is a crucial step to achieving a smooth and long-lasting finish. The goal of preparing your kitchen appliance before painting is to eliminate stains, dirt, grime, and other surface contaminants that would hinder the bond between the paint and the surface.

Here’s how to prepare your kitchen appliance for painting:

1.   Sand the appliance’s surface- Use 180-grit sandpaper to remove the existing finish of the appliance, then clear any particles using a brush and shop vacuum.
2.   Wipe with a damp cloth- After sanding, use a wet microfiber cloth to prep the appliance’s surface for primer application.
3.   Cover or remove parts you don’t wish to paint- You can either remove or cover the parts of the appliance you don’t want to paint using some tape. The place where you will paint the appliance should be clear, too. This way, you won’t accidentally stain objects you don’t intend to paint.
4.   Prime your appliance- You may use a low-nap mini roller to prime a large flat area of the appliance and a soft-bristled nylon brush for corners. Then, apply some light pressure when brushing long strokes to reduce brush strokes. After applying the first coat, set it aside to dry for two to four hours, then re-apply the second layer once it has dried. You may also utilize an airless paint sprayer to apply the primer, but strictly follow the instructions indicated in the product label to avoid mishaps.

In closing, painting kitchen appliances is a low-cost option if you wish to unify the look of your kitchen. It will also allow you to avoid buying new stuff, if the current home appliances are okay. But, before painting your appliances, ensure to pick the right type and color of the paint as it would be a waste if you apply the wrong one.
