Ways to Help Home Appliances Age Gracefully

We rely so much on our washers, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers and other main home appliances that we forget that they need some care from time to time. New technology fools us into believing that all the bells and whistles that make appliances easy to use will also keep them running for longer. But this is not true. Most washing machines last around seven years, freezers & fridges may last one year more, ranges may serve for over ten years.

The life expectancy of all major home appliances depends on many factors, their quality, model, and brand included. But there are a few things you can do to keep them running well and even for longer than their expected lifespan. Most importantly, without major problems. Let’s see how you can help your home appliances age gracefully.

Make sure appliances are stable

Most appliances must be adjusted from time to time. Heavy washer & dryer loads, for example, might throw them off balance. If you feel that your appliances shake when they work, adjust their feet.

Don’t ignore home appliance problems

Fridge RepairmanAs appliances get older, some problems cannot be avoided. After all, they consist of so many components that it’s only natural for some of them to eventually break down. Finding an appliance technician quickly is pressing and not just for the obvious reason to use the oven, stove, or dryer again.

When you fail to do the required appliance repairs when needed, you may end up dealing with worse problems. For starters, you may put your safety at risk. Don’t forget that gas ranges, malfunctioning microwaves and broken dryers may become dangerous. And then, problems that are not fixed quickly only expand and might take a toll on the overall performance of the appliance, compromising its lifespan.

Keep appliances clean

Fridges & freezers work better when their coils are clean. If the coils are dusty, they work harder and die younger. The filters of dishwashers must also be cleaned, or the appliance will eventually get clogged and problems will start. You should also keep the AC filters clean and remove debris from the external unit, or the appliance will struggle to deliver the right temps and will break down faster. As for your washer, run a cycle with a special cleaner and without any clothing once in a while to eliminate the growth of mold – hence, damage.

Don’t leave the refrigerator empty

Keep the fridge full at all times. When there are plenty of items in the refrigerator, the appliance works effortlessly. Why? Because there are many items at low temps when you open the fridge and they all team-up to keep the warm wave from the kitchen from entering the appliance. And so, the cool temps are maintained without the fridge struggling.

Leave the washer door open

Check the vents often

Dryers, air conditioners and ranges are usually connected to vents, which also get dirty and might clog. It’s vital to check and clean them often.

Let your appliances breathe

Although modern fridges are designed to sit flushed with the other kitchen furniture, keeping them in some distance is good for their ventilation. Another secret to keeping the fridge running well for years is to avoid placing it next to heat sources (like large openings).

Keep & read the appliance manuals

Each appliance comes with a manual. Don’t throw it away. It will guide and help you take good care of your appliance so that it will age gracefully. Use it.
